Located along the northern Outer Banks of North Carolina is the quaint village of Corolla, a small town rich in history and culture. This area is filled with historic landmarks, including the grand Whalehead residence, originally built in the 1920s as a hunting and fishing lodge for wealthy visitors. The fully restored mansion is located on thirty-nine acres of beautiful waterfront property, and it is also the site of the annual beach music festival known as “Buck’s Beach Blast.” Locals and tourists alike soak in the culture of the Carolina Shag and “beach music” on the north lawn of Whalehead, overlooking Currituck Beach.
If you’re not familiar with shagging, “the swing dance of the South,” it’s a type of dance that originated in the 1930s and ’40s that involves quick footwork combined with upbeat rhythm and blues known as “beach music.” Shagging actually began at open-air beach parties along the Carolina coast. Even if you’re not much of a dancer, it’s entertaining to watch at this all-day affair where picnics are welcome and grooving to the music is encouraged.
