It has become a tradition for many Houstonians: checking to see what’s playing for the evening, packing a cooler, and heading over to Hermann Park for a performance at the Miller Outdoor Theatre. From musicals to movies to ballet, this seven-acre venue hosts productions as diverse as the city itself. With an eight-month season of entertainment, seating for 1,700 people, plus a lawn on the hillside with room for 4,500 picnickers, it’s easy to catch a show if you’re in the area. The performances are “always free” at the Miller, the largest free outdoor theatre in the country.
Not only does the theatre offer weekend performances under the stars, but it also hosts childrens’ plays during the week making it the perfect, inexpensive day-time outing with the kids during summer break. Why not make a day of it by exploring Hermann Park, also home to the Houston Museum of Natural Science and the Houston Zoo, and then end the night with a relaxing picnic on the hillside of this visually stunning outdoor theatre?
