When you think of Louisville, Kentucky, you probably think of the Derby or maybe the iconic hot brown sandwich (if you are hungry). What you might not know is that Louisville is actually home to the oldest Shakespeare festival in the country.
Nestled in Old Louisville’s Central Park, you will find the C. Douglas Ramey Amphitheater where Shakespearean plays are performed at nightfall every summer. The mission of Kentucky Shakespeare’s is to enrich the city and the Old Louisville community. These performances, featuring professional actors from across the country, are open to the public and completely free of charge.
What could be more romantic than packing up a picnic, spreading out a blanket, and watching performances of some of the Bard’s greatest works under the stars? But wait—it gets better. Before you get your nest made for the performance, be sure to spend some time exploring this beautiful sixteen-acre park. The grounds are characterized by elaborate walkways and border plantings, all situated right in the heart of the city. Now that’s a great idea for a midsummer night’s dream.
