Visiting Abingdon, Virginia, is almost like taking a step back in time. The town, which was named after the ancestral home of Martha Washington, is a Virginia Historic Landmark. The downtown streets are lined with nineteenth-century buildings, some even dating back to the antebellum era. In fact, one of the main attractions in Abingdon is the Martha Washington Inn, built in 1832.
Every Sunday afternoon in April, classical and jazz musicians hold free concerts on the lawn of this famous inn. Music on the Lawn is part of the Abingdon Music Experience, bringing a sense of community and togetherness to this unique downtown. Picnic baskets are sure to be full of Virginia ham sandwiches and some of those famous local peanuts for snacking. It’s the perfect opportunity to enjoy the fresh spring air and wonderful music at “The Martha,” as it is affectionately called by the locals.
