The letters to and from Eleanor Gehrig that are cited throughout these notes provide an insider’s view of the making of The Pride of the Yankees. She was at the center of the story, especially as she helped Paul Gallico with the outline and first script and corresponded with her agent, Christy Walsh, who was also working as a publicist for Samuel Goldwyn. Much of the documentation was provided by the National Baseball Hall of Fame, to which she donated many things, not just letters, and by the Samuel Goldwyn Foundation and Samuel Goldwyn Jr. Family Trust. Ruth Pollack Pappas, whose father, George, served as Eleanor’s lawyer, provided access to still more material. This book benefited mightily from all their generosity.
