I was Lydent. I knew what I was, our history, and what was expected. Nothing got past me. Nox made sure of that.
But her... I didn’t expect her.
Sitting here at my desk at Warrior Camp, I went back over the first time I saw her. Wild red hair, and her big blue eyes looking at me like a broken lamb. She struck a chord in my soul. In them too. It worried me.
Team Apex was responsible for her, and I did that. For selfish reasons. They were the only ones I trusted with her.
She was rare—once a human, now a Lydent.
A Lydent female.
She wasn’t expected, but we’d all protect her with our lives.
My life.
My head jerked towards my open office door when I heard a cry. A female cry of pain. Not wasting time, I shimmed into the hallway and felt like I’d been kicked in the gut.
She was on the ground in agony. “Tracy? Shit.” I rushed to her side and picked her up. A moan escaped her lips. “Don't worry, you're going to be okay. You're going to be just fine, you’ll see.” I hoped I wasn’t lying to her. Shimming us to the Lydent hospital, I laid her down on a cot then rushed to the sink to grab a washcloth to press against her feverish forehead. “It's okay. You will be okay. I’m going to get help. I’ll be right back. Don’t die.”
“Doc!” I roared, rushing out to the hallway. We had to save her. She couldn’t die. “Doc!”
She was too young to die.
