Heal My Heart

Then Jesus said, “Come to me, all of you who are weary and carry heavy burdens, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you. Let me teach you, because I am humble and gentle at heart, and you will find rest for your souls.”

MATTHEW 11:28-29

WHAT BREAKS YOUR HEART? Is it the death of a loved one? Moving away from friends? Losing your pet? Your parents’ divorce?

There are times in life when we feel sad. With time, sadness typically passes. Heartbreak is a bit different. Heartbreak is when something happens that changes things. Your life takes a different course because you have lost something. And being sad is part of that, but it’s a sadness that doesn’t usually just go away one day and we suddenly feel better. Heartbreak is a deep, powerful sadness that feels like it will never go away. It changes how we feel inside. It makes happiness seem impossible sometimes.

God knows we experience heartbreak. Jesus knew heartbreak, too, and he offered to take over our heavy burdens so that we may find “rest for [our] souls.” That’s because heartbreak doesn’t just make us sad, it wears on our souls. It makes everyday living more difficult.

God is there for us when our hearts are broken. He wants us to talk to him about how we feel and to lean on his strength during those times. He promises to help us get through it. It’s also important to talk to adults who can help when what we feel goes beyond just sadness into heartbreak. Many times, talking about how we feel can help.

PRAY

Dear God,

Thank you for being close to the brokenhearted. Please be with me—and remind me you’re with me—when I go through heartbreak. Please also put people in my life I can talk to and get help from. Amen.
