Alone, But Not

No power in the sky above or in the earth below—indeed, nothing in all creation will ever be able to separate us from the love of God that is revealed in Christ Jesus our Lord.

ROMANS 8:39

DO YOU EVER FEEL ALONE? Most people have moments when they feel alone. Sometimes it’s a good thing—we get to spend time with ourselves and think about things. Sometimes, though, it doesn’t feel very good to be alone. It might be that when we want friends or conversation, there’s none to be found.

Here’s a fact to remember: we’re never truly alone. God is always with us. When Jesus left Earth, he told his followers that the Holy Spirit was coming to take his place. The Holy Spirit lives in us when we are followers of Jesus. He guides us and helps us show God’s character to others. So even though there may be times when it seems we’re on our own with no help, we actually have God right here with us. He’ll never leave us, even though other people might.

God knew there would be many times when we’d be alone after Jesus left. That’s why he sent the Holy Spirit to comfort and guide his followers once Jesus went to heaven. So in the times when we feel alone, we can focus on listening for the Holy Spirit. This will remind us that even when we’re not surrounded by other people, we’re never alone.

DO

Go into your least favorite room in the house. Maybe it’s the garage or a closet. Why did you choose this area? What is it that you don’t like? Now, imagine how you feel standing in this room compared to how you feel when you’re alone. Both are an uncomfortable feeling. Now, remember that the Holy Spirit is within you—God himself. You aren’t alone, no matter where you are or whom you’re with.

PRAY

Dear God,

Thank you for sending the Holy Spirit to be with me. Thank you for making sure I’m never alone. Please help me remember that you’re always with me during times when I feel alone. Amen.
