Show Up

A person standing alone can be attacked and defeated, but two can stand back-to-back and conquer. Three are even better, for a triple-braided cord is not easily broken.

ECCLESIASTES 4:12

HAVE YOU EVER LISTENED to cheerleaders support their teams? They jump and shout, do flips, and get the crowd to join in. They’re at every game, whether it’s snowy or rainy or sunny. Why? Their job is to show up, to excite the crowd, and to support the team—hopefully to a win.

In a way, we’re all cheerleaders. God wants us to show up, support each other, encourage one another, and have each other’s backs. He wants us to talk up other people, build them up, and rally support around them. Why? Because that’s what God does for us.

This verse points out that when we’re together, bonded in support, we’re stronger. When we don’t support each other and try to go it alone, we’re weaker. God wants us to show others that we’re on their side, we like them, and we’re for them. That’s what God does for us. He’s our support, our cheerleader, and our best friend.

DO

What’s one way you can show support to a friend this week? Is he or she facing a big test or game? How can you “show up” for this friend? Maybe it’s a quick text wishing him or her good luck or a note of encouragement taped to his or her favorite snack or drink.

PRAY

Dear God,

Thank you for always showing up for me. Thank you for being my supporter. Please help me remember to support my friends and family and show up for them. Amen.
