Get Well Soon

Are any of you sick? You should call for the elders of the church to come and pray over you, anointing you with oil in the name of the Lord. Such a prayer offered in faith will heal the sick, and the Lord will make you well. And if you have committed any sins, you will be forgiven.

JAMES 5:14-15

GETTING SICK IS A BUMMER. You can’t play with friends or go to school or do the stuff you like to do. Your body doesn’t cooperate. You feel crummy. Sometimes you’re sick for a few days, the virus or bug runs its course, and you get back to your old self. And sometimes people get sick with a condition like diabetes or cancer, and they don’t feel better for a long time.

All these situations are different. When you have a simple bug you caught at school, you might feel bad in the moment and miss out on something fun. But if an illness is more serious or a family member is seriously ill, it can mean missing out on lots of fun things. It can mean the normal things you do aren’t the normal things other families do. Your normal might include constant medications, hospital stays, needle pokes, money worries, and parent worries.

When we (or a family member) are sick, it’s important to remember that God cares for us. He may not heal us as quickly as we want or in the way we want. But that doesn’t mean he doesn’t love us and doesn’t feel our pain and sickness. So no matter what kind of illness you’re facing, keep talking to God about it. He’ll give you comfort and support and love—and those things will always make us feel better.

DO

Think about the last time you or a family member was sick. On a separate piece of paper, draw a picture of you or that person during the sickness. Then find a red marker or crayon, and draw a heart around the person as a reminder that God’s love always surrounds us.

PRAY

Dear God,

I don’t like to be sick. I don’t like it when someone I love is sick. Please comfort me and my family during the times when we don’t feel well. Remind us of your love. Amen.
