I’m So Blue
The LORD is close to the brokenhearted; he rescues those whose spirits are crushed.
PSALM 34:18
WHAT MAKES YOU SAD? All kinds of things can turn a happy mood into a blue mood. There are little things, like a disappointing grade. There are big things, like the death of a pet or a divorce. Sadness is part of our lives as humans. There are many things every day that can make us sad if we let them, and there are things that are undeniably sad that we have to learn to live with.
God doesn’t want us to be sad, but he knows there will be times in our lives when we will be. Even his Son, Jesus, was sad when he knew he would be crucified. He went to the garden of Gethsemane to pray. There he told his friends, “My soul is crushed with grief to the point of death” (Matthew 26:38).
Sadness can feel like that—crushing. In those times, God wants us to cry out to him and tell him how we feel. He wants to share our grief and comfort us. So in the moments when the sadness seems overwhelming—whether it’s a big thing or a small thing—talk to God. He is always here, always listening.
DO
At the bottom of this page, draw a simple image of something that makes you feel sad when you think about it. Put down your pencil, and place your finger on the drawing. Then close your eyes and talk to God about that situation.
PRAY
Dear God,
Thank you for helping me during the sad times in my life. Thank you for knowing everything that makes me feel blue. Thank you for always being there to listen and help me through those times. Amen.
