God Is
Anyone who does not love does not know God, for God is love.
1 JOHN 4:8
DO YOU KNOW WHO GOD IS?
Who do you think he is?
If he were one of your friends, what would he be like?
Those are tough questions to answer—but they’re especially tough when we don’t feel like we know who God really is. What do you think would be a great way to find out more about who God is? Maybe spending time in prayer or reading the Bible more, right? What are other ways you might get to know more about who God is?
God gives us a good idea about who he is in the Bible. Imagine that: the Creator of the universe wants us—simple, little us—to know specific things about him. He tells us things like he is love, he is the beginning and the end, he is merciful, he is holy . . . the details he tells us about himself go on and on. The fact that God wants us to know these things about him tells us that he cares about us deeply. After all, why would God want us to know he’s kind and loving and forgiving and for us? Probably because he wants us to have a relationship with him and because he wants us to trust and love him.
DO
Think of something you like to do that makes you feel good inside, like going outside or drawing or playing with a favorite toy. Take a few minutes and enjoy doing that thing. As you do, remember that God knows all the things we love and the things that make us happy. And he wants us to know who he is because he wants to be at the core of our happiness.
PRAY
Dear God,
Thank you for telling us about yourself in the Bible and for giving us your Word to learn from. Remind us every day that you are not a distant God who doesn’t care about us, but that you are with us and you love us and you want us to know you the same way we know our best friends. Amen.
