Do the Impossible

David triumphed over the Philistine with only a sling and a stone, for he had no sword.

1 SAMUEL 17:50

LIFE IS FULL OF CHALLENGES, and sometimes those challenges can seem overwhelming. Think of a major obstacle you had to overcome, like learning how to do multiplication or mastering a gymnastics move or getting a hit in baseball. We make goals because we want to overcome challenges, and that takes work. But sometimes we need help.

What do you do when you’re facing a challenge that seems impossible? First, we can ask God for help. Then, we can think about the story of David when he beat Goliath. David was a young boy, and Goliath was a warrior giant that experienced soldiers wouldn’t dare to fight. David asked God for help, and then with a simple stone and slingshot, he took down Goliath.

David might have been a little scared, a little anxious, and a little worried that he wouldn’t beat the great warrior. But with God’s help, he did. He did something so amazing that it was written about in the Bible so we could learn about it thousands of years later. So don’t be afraid of the challenges you face. Don’t give up before you get a chance to beat your giants. Ask God for help, and you will triumph!

DO

Stand up. Now squat down until your legs are bent like you’re sitting in a chair—without the chair. Stay like this for one minute—longer if you can do it. What does this feel like? Now do the same thing but sitting in a chair this time. What’s the difference? How is this like what happens when we face challenges on our own versus when we ask for God’s help?

PRAY

Dear God,

Thank you for helping me face my challenges and overcome them. Please help me remember to go to you first when I have an obstacle. I know you’ll always help me. Amen.
