Time to Rest

I have given rest to the weary and joy to the sorrowing.

JEREMIAH 31:25

WE HAVE BUSY LIVES, busy months, and busy days. It can seem like life is just way too busy sometimes—like we can barely keep up. And it makes us tired, especially when the busy holiday season arrives.

When we have those times in life when there’s too much going on, it’s normal to feel worn out and overwhelmed. When the holidays come, life can get super busy with all the extra programs, parties, and chores that have to get done. Sometimes our parents get really stressed out and tired around the holidays too.

As the holidays approach, you can work to take some of the stress and tiredness out by pitching in a little more and doing what your parents ask. And watch for the signs that you’re tired—you might have a short temper or feel like slamming your door or just want to be alone. (You might see these same things in your parents!) When you know you’re tired, do things to help your body and mind rest. Go to bed on time (or even a little early). Take breaks where you read or watch a show. Do things for your parents to give them a break too, like pour your dad a glass of water or help your mom straighten up her desk.

The holidays are a lot of fun, but they can be tiring. You and your family will enjoy them more when you make a point to rest and give each other rest.

DO

Think of the things that can make you tired and stressed, like too much homework and extra chores. Write each item on a slip of paper. Take the slips of paper and a pencil outside. For each item you listed, find something in nature that makes you feel happy and rested, like birds and tall trees. Write those things on the other side of each paper until you’ve filled them all.

PRAY

Dear God,

Thank you for making life fun, busy, and exciting. Thank you for giving me so many things to look forward to. Please remind me to take time to rest and help my family rest as we enjoy this wonderful season. Amen.
