15 ‘The Doc’ was Mrs Moore’s brother, Dr John Hawkins Askins (1877–1923). He was born in County Louth and educated at Trinity College, Dublin, where he obtained a Bachelor of Medicine in 1904. He was commissioned a lieutenant in the Royal Army Medical Corps in 1915, and was promoted to captain in 1916. He was wounded in January 1917. Following his marriage to Mary Emmet Goldsborough, of Washington, DC, they lived in Clevedon, where their daughter Peony was born. Dr Askins’ heath seems to have been broken by the war, and after his discharge he devoted much of his time to psychoanalysis. Shortly before 1922 he and his family moved to Iffley, just outside Oxford, to be near his sister. His wife’s sister, Frances, was married to William Force Stead. See note 35 to the letter of 14 March 1921.
