20 Frank Percy Wilson (1889–1963), Lewis’s tutor in English, took a BA in English from Birmingham, and then a B. Litt. from Lincoln College, Oxford. While serving in the Warwickshire Regiment during World War I he was badly wounded on the Somme. He returned to Oxford in 1920 as a University lecturer, and was appointed Reader in 1927. He was Professor of English at the University of Leeds 1929–36, and Merton Professor of English Literature at Oxford 1947–57. He was one of the editors of the Oxford History of English Literature, and he it was who invited Lewis to contribute English Literature in the Sixteenth Century (1954) to that series.
