86 David George Hogarth (1862–1927), scholar and traveller, took his degree from Magdalen in 1885. He travelled and excavated in Asia Minor, Cyprus, Egypt and Knossos, many of which places are discussed in his books. In 1908 he became Keeper of the Ashmolean Museum, Oxford. According to a note Lewis wrote on the presidential elections (LP IX: 307–9), most of the Fellows of Magdalen were hoping to elect Hogarth as their next President when he died suddenly on 6 November 1927. An obituary appeared in The Times (7 November 1927), p. 14.
