24 Owen Barfield, ‘The Tower’, stanza II, ll. 36–7. This ‘long poem’ of Owen Barfield’s, written between 1922 and 1928, has never been published. Writing about it in his diary of 21 June 1922, Lewis said: ‘The “Tower” is full of magnificent material and never a dead phrase…The story is (to me) as hard to follow as Sordello. But what genius! The metre too eccentric for me, but on that subject Barfield has probably forgotten more than I ever knew’ (AMR, p. 53).Sordello (1840) is by Robert Browning.
