Dylan and Gofannon are both characters from old Welsh mythology, and as well as popping up in medieval poetry they both appear in the collection of tales known as the Mabinogion – Dylan in the fourth branch of the Mabinogi and Gofannon in Culhwch ac Olwen. In fact, the words Gruff uses to call Dylan are based on the original medieval Welsh description of Dylan in the fourth branch, which I read in the edition by Ian Hughes. If you’d like to discover more of these old tales, I can highly recommend The Mab: Eleven Epic Stories from the Mabinogi, edited by Matt Brown and Eloise Williams, and my favourite translation of the original medieval stories is that of Sioned Davies. Every myth holds fresh story sparks.
