Algebra uses the concepts of arithmetic and number properties but adds a twist: variables. Variables represent unknown quantities, and many algebraic questions task you with determining what numerical values variables actually represent. Variables are often defined by the rules of equations and inequalities, statements that show the relationship between two or more expressions as equal (equations) or greater than or less than each other (inequalities).
