Chapter Eight

It was her wedding day. Alexandra examined herself in the mirror as Emmaline hovered behind her, tugging out a curl here and there. Mama sat on a chair watching, while Mrs. White dispensed advice. Alexandra gave a final twirl and the lace-edged frills on her yellow dress fluttered. She wasn’t as pretty as Emmaline, but she’d do.

“’Tis time, Lexie.” Mama stood. “I shall be there, but you won’t see me.” She clasped her hands together. “I never thought to be so fortunate as to see you get married.” A tear slid down her cheek and Emmaline reached up to dab it away with her gloved finger.

“Don’t cry, Mama. Today is a happy day.”

“Thanks to dear Theo,” Mama agreed.

Alexandra smiled. ‘Happy’ did not begin to describe the dizzy, excited, gleeful feeling that had bubbled inside her since Theo had asked for her hand in marriage. She had no doubts, no fears. She and Theo fit together perfectly in ways Mama would be shocked to know about. Or maybe not.

She and Emmaline walked side by side into the big drawing room where everyone was assembled.

There he was, tall and strong, waiting for her. He smiled, his eyes admiring her. Then he stretched out his hand and she stepped forward to take it, sure that this was where she most wanted to be. With Theo. Always.
