The first winter period on the Eastern Front in late 1941, and troops use draught animals to pull sledges along a road during Army Group Centre’s drive on Moscow. The soldiers are wearing the German Army standard issue greatcoat with toque and M1938 field cap. The German Army lacked sufficient provisions to sustain their force during a winter war and as a consequence many thousands got frostbite and other ailments caused by the extreme sub-zero temperatures.
