Two soldiers, more than likely on guard duties, during operations on the Eastern Front in 1941. Both troops wear the standard army field greatcoat with woollen toque beneath their M1938 field cap. Scarves were sometimes worn with the toque in order to help provide the wearer with extra insulation. The first winter period in Russia was a severe ordeal for the German Army and paralysed the German drive on Moscow (code-named Operation ‘Typhoon’).
