* Pius IX (Giovanni Mastai), Pope from 1846 to 1878, began his reign with a series of liberal acts (amnesty to political prisoners and reduction of censorship on books), but in the wake of the 1848 revolutions, drew back from this liberal stance, later becoming famous for the Syllabus, an attack on “modern heresies,” and for promulgating papal infallibility (1871).
