Chapter Five: What’s Up Doc?

  1. 1. The first real bit I ever wrote. One might call it my signature bit. Perhaps I’ll share later.

  2. 2. An “individual” in cheerleading is the gymnastic performance you do for the player you’re assigned. Ours began with “John Smith, he’s my man, if he can’t do it no one can!” followed by your sweet moves.

  3. 3. Actually I grew up with my family calling me “Neak.” It was a nickname my uncle Memmeh had started. He would literally bounce me on his knee, singing “Neak-o-neak, neak-o-neak.” And I would laaaauuuugh and laaaauuuugh. And eventually my family started calling me Neak.

  4. 4. Jack and Jill of America is to black folks what debutante cotillion clubs are to white people. At least that’s what I liken it to.
