Jeffrey Carney, the air force intelligence analyst who spied for the Stasi, was arrested and charged with espionage in April 1991. He served twelve years in prison.

Rainer Rupp also spent twelve years in prison. He lives in Germany today.

Project Pegasus, a.k.a. Project 908, a.k.a. DMSPA, was terminated by President Clinton in 1992. FEMA took over many of its responsibilities and incorporated its communications technology into mobile command convoys that would be detailed to the White House Military Office in times of war. During Clinton’s presidency, the WHMO and the Pentagon kept threadbare versions of these contingency programs alive. Their functions were scattered throughout the government. The September 11 terrorist attacks, and the potential threat of a suitcase-sized nuclear bomb detonation in Washington, brought the plans back into vogue.

Stanislav Petrov died in 2017.

Oleg Gordievsky met Ronald Reagan in July 1987, providing canny insight to the president on the eve of a summit. He was reunited with Leila and his family in September 1991. The separation had taken its toll, and Oleg and Leila separated shortly thereafter. He lives in London.
