Day 52:  Check Your Bearings

If a captain neglects to check his bearings regularly, his ship could veer off course. Getting just a little bit off course could be very dangerous or at the very least quite inconvenient. So, the captain needs to know where he is at all times. The same is true in life.

Do you know where you are going once this life is over? A lot of people cannot answer that question. To know where you are going, you first have to know where you are. Are you lost? Do you have a lot of questions? I encourage you to seek the answers to your questions. Are you saved, yet you don’t understand what you’re supposed to do with your life? I encourage you to pray and ask God to guide you.

The Word of God is perfectly clear on what‘s going to happen to us, whether we are lost or saved. As your walk with Him progresses, He will reveal His Word to you. The more you keep in His Word, the more He will reveal.

Do not be amazed at this, for a time is coming when all who are in their graves will hear his voice and come out—those who have done good will rise to live, and those who have done evil will rise to be condemned (John 5:28–29 NIV).

Who is doing good? Those who believe in the Lord Jesus Christ; that He died and rose again. And through that faith, those “good” and faithful servants will always try to do the will of God in their lives. Being “good” doesn’t mean we won’t stumble now and then. It is a learning process, and we all go through that awkward phase.

I desire to do your will, O my God; your law is within my heart (Psalm 40:8 NIV).

I recently finished reading through the Bible for the eleventh time. Each time I have done this, God has revealed new truths to me and corrected my ship’s course. And I believe that throughout my twelfth reading, He will reveal even more.

We all need to know where we are and where we are going. Check your bearings. Are you going in the right direction? If not, this should be your prayer:

Teach me to do your will, for you are my God; may your good Spirit lead me on level ground (Psalm 143:10 NIV).
