Hurricane: a tropical storm with winds that have reached a constant speed of 74 miles per hour or more. The eye of a storm is usually 20–30 miles wide and may extend over 400 miles. The dangers of a storm include torrential rains, high winds and storm surges. A hurricane can last for two weeks or more over open water.
Then they cried out to the LORD in their trouble, and he brought them out of their distress. He stilled the storm to a whisper; the waves of the sea were hushed. They were glad when it grew calm, and he guided them to their desired haven.
Let them give thanks to the LORD for his unfailing love and his wonderful deeds for mankind (Psalm 107:28–31 NIV).
I like to think of life as a hurricane. Before salvation, there is no direction in our lives, so we roam aimlessly. We leave destruction in our path, not caring or even looking back at what we’ve done. Just like a hurricane, we leave behind broken hearts and broken relationships. Turmoil is all around us, spinning our lives completely out of control.
But you know what? God is at the center of our hurricane. We just need to reach out and let Him take hold of our hands. He will pull us from the destructive path and into the safety of the eye of that hurricane. It is so peaceful there, so calm. He will put us on a new path, a path of healing and love.
Once we accept Jesus as our personal Savior, He will begin a change in us. He will guide us in the way He wants us to go. No more wandering aimlessly, no more destruction.
Sure, there will be those times when the storm begins to blow again, but God will help us to control it and keep it from becoming another hurricane.
So, when you feel out of control, call on Him, reach out and let Him guide you to the eye of your hurricane.
I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world (John 16:33 NIV).
