Day 102:  Landlubbers

The waves were crashing and the sea grew dark. The captain shouted orders to his crew. They ran frantically around the deck, trying to save themselves and their ship. As the lightning struck and lit up the sky, you could see the fear on their faces as they stared into the face of the beast . . .

Even though I walk through the darkest valley, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me (Psalm 23:4 NIV).

We all have fears. Something that is not fearful to you may frighten someone else tremendously. Some people may fear going out on a boat. They are afraid the boat will sink or capsize. They may fear falling overboard or even getting seasick. Yet, instead of facing their fears, they give in to them and completely avoid the water. This is not healthy. As believers in Jesus, we are stronger than that because we have God to turn to in those fearful times. We do not have to give in to our fears; fear does not come from God.

For the Spirit God gave us does not make us timid, but gives us power, love and self-discipline (2 Timothy 1:7 NIV).

God gives us power, love and self-control. When we ask Him, He will give us the power to stand up to our fears. No matter what you fear, don’t let it control you. Step out in faith and trust God to help you. With God on your side, who on earth can hurt you? He is your protector; all you need to do is ask.

Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid (John 14:27 NIV).

When you are afraid, you need not be ashamed. You are only human. But you need to learn to put those fears into God’s hands. He will help you overcome your fears and make you feel safe once again. And facing your fears makes you stronger so that you are able to face those fears when they resurface—and help others to do the same!

So, what do you say? Are you ready to take the next step and get into the boat? See you on board!
