Day 136:  Crashing Waves

But the wicked are like the tossing sea; for it cannot be quiet, and its waters toss up mire and dirt. “There is no peace,” says my God, “for the wicked” (Isaiah 57:20–21 ESV).

Years ago I used to go camping at the ocean with my family. I remember one night sitting around the campfire with my sister, listening to the ocean waves. Our campsite was far from the beach, yet that night the crashing waves sounded like they were only a few yards away. My sister and I were so sure that the tide was coming in too close to our campsite, we decided to venture out into the darkness to see for ourselves, to calm our fears.

How can someone “see” in the darkness? Seeing requires some kind of light.

In our spiritual walk with God we will have our share of dark paths. That’s why we should always carry the Light with us. He is right there beside us, so there is no need to fear.

Then your light will break forth like the dawn, and your healing will quickly appear; then your righteousness will go before you, and the glory of the LORD will be your rear guard. Then you will call, and the LORD will answer; you will cry for help, and he will say: Here am I (Isaiah 58:8–9 NIV).

My sister and I each had a flashlight, but the beams were not very strong. After walking quite a distance, we were convinced that the waves were nowhere near our camp. If we had better lights, we would have figured it out sooner and not suffered with our fears for so long.

Christ is our Light. When we let Him shine, everything becomes perfectly clear; fear of the darkness fades away. He calms the crashing waves and turns them into still waters. And unlike the flashlight, His light is always brighter than the sun. No fear of a dead battery; no fear of His light ever fading.

The LORD is my shepherd; I shall not want. He makes me lie down in green pastures. He leads me beside still waters (Psalm 23:1–2 ESV).

If Christ is not in you, you are living in darkness, and your life is like those unseen crashing waves.

I encourage you to find the Light and avoid the crashing waves.
