We begin this section by looking into the experience of individual addicts as they pursue what becomes an involuntary journey of personal discovery. We then look at the addict’s family and the mysterious but ultimately understandable problem of codependence, the echo of addiction. We next explore the roles of family and community to investigate the various forces that promote or prevent addiction, looking in detail at the common problems of alcohol and cigarette smoking in families and communities. Next, we examine ways to drug-proof children and, failing the mission of prevention (as often happens with the best efforts), to find and use addiction treatment. We end the section with a look at the Twelve Step fellowships, which are modern miracles in our midst, a discussion of public policy to prevent addiction, and speculation about the future direction of illicit drug use throughout the world.
