The combined force of Notes from the Underground and Demons should alone have been sufficient to arrest the communist revolution before it began; these are the most thoroughgoing artistic refutations of that doctrine ever submitted by the hand of man. The fact that the “pure artist” Dostoevsky did not succeed through these writings in stopping the “march of history” in the name of Orthodox Christianity is extremely indicative, and deserves careful contemplation.
