411. Meindert Hobbema, 1638-1709,
Baroque, Dutch, The Avenue at Middleharnis, 1689,
Oil on canvas, 103.5 x 141 cm, National Gallery, London
This is one of the later Vedute (a painting depicting a panoramic view of a place) painted by Hobbema. Having been a pupil of Ruisdael, his landscapes were influenced by the master’s manner but tended to be more simplified, all the accessory details being removed while the expanse of sky was emphasised.
