Māui was the hero of all Pacific islands visited by Polynesians. People loved the stories of his deeds because he was clever and because he had helped men in many ways. In every island group the stories say, “Māui lived here, in these islands.” Some Hawaiian stories say that his home was on Maui, on Hawai‘i, or on O‘ahu.
