Fifteen forty-nine hours EST
The Police mortuary was located in a separate building behind the main Police building.
Wayne escorted the deputy director into the building and spoke to a man in a white gown he then turned to the deputy director and said, “This is our pathologist Frank Hamilton sir, he has the autopsies scheduled for tomorrow, if we give him five minutes he will have the bodies ready for your viewing.”
Walter Smith said, “thank you Frank.”
Five minutes later the pathologist came back to them and escorted them into the large well-lit room that had a chill in the air, where there were sheeted bodies on tables.
Walter Smith noticed there were quite a few and said, “How many do you have Frank?”
The Pathologist replied, “Twenty sir.”
Walter Smith turned to Wayne and said, “Seems a lot of people to be at the warehouse?”
Wayne was quick with his reply having anticipated this question and said, “My thoughts too sir, but that was the numbers we encountered when we went in.”
Walter Smith turned to the Pathologist and said, “so Frank; give me your opinion of the causes of death?”
“Sir, until I can perform the autopsies to actual confirm causes of death, all I can say at this point is their deaths appear to be from multiple gunshot wounds.”
Walter Smith understood the pathologist’s slight evasion, as it was critical in these circumstances to have the exact cause of death established, even if the body had gunshot wounds to it.
“May I have a look at them Frank?”
“Certainly sir, some of them are not a pretty sight.”
“I appreciate your advice Frank; however I have unfortunately seen many bodies during my career.”
Frank nodded and extended his right arm in a gesture for the deputy director take a look.
Walter Smith walked over to the first table and pulled the white sheet back exposing a naked male body with multiple wounds to it.
He leaned forward closer to the corpse and looked closely at the wounds and he pulled the sheet back and repeated this exercise with all the sheeted bodies, before returning to Wayne and Frank and said, “they do not look like native Americans, Frank in your estimation what nationality do you think they are?”
“I would guess they are of eastern European descent, based on their skin pigment hair and facial features sir.”
Walter Smith said, “thank you Frank that will be all.”
A couple of minutes later Wayne and Walter were outside when Wayne said, “You wish to see the weapons cache sir?”
Walter Smith looked at his watch four O five PM and replied, “A cup of coffee would be right about now colonel then I will see them.”
Wayne Rochester replied, “A good call sir must admit I could do with one myself, follow me back to my office.”
Thirty minutes later Wayne Rochester showed the CIA deputy director to the evidence room where the arms from the warehouse had been stored.
A sergeant was present and Wayne introduced the deputy director to him, “this is Sergeant Nixon, any questions relating to the items here and the sergeant will be able to answer them for you sir.”
Walter Smith said, “Sergeant what type of weapons were recovered?”
“Sir; the men at the warehouse were equipped with the AS- Val silenced assault weapon, the other munitions found were a mixture of shotguns, grenades and C-4 explosives.”
“Where does it originate from and what calibre is it?”
“The weapon is chambered for the 9x39mm SP-6 round that is a rifle calibre 7.62x39 case with a special widened neck and originates from the Soviet Union sir.”
Walter Smith reached into his pocket, pulled out the plastic evidence bag, handed it to the Sergeant, and said, “What type of cartridge is that Sergeant?”
Sergeant Nixon looked at the cartridge and replied, “It’s a 9x19mm Parabellum sir.”
“Sergeant; how popular is this cartridge and what type of weapon uses it?”
“Sir; the 9x19mm Parabellum is a very popular cartridge that was developed in 1901 by Georg Luger. It is a very common cartridge used in handguns as well as submachine guns compatible with at least twenty weapons; this is from a full metal jacketed round.”
“Can you give me some idea to the types of weapon this could have come from Sergeant?”
“Sir, anything from the Glock or Colt pistol range to the Heckler & Koch MP-5 submachine gun range.”
Walter Smith paused and thought for a moment and then said, “thank you Sergeant you have been most helpful.”
The CIA deputy director then moved around the room examining the weapons and munitions then returned Wayne and said, “thank you Colonel I am satisfied with everything you have shown me. I commend you and your people on a good job done.”
“Thank you sir, is there anything else I can help you with?”
“That will be all, time I went back to Langley.”
“Then follow me and I will escort you back to the reception area and the car park.”
Ten minutes later Wayne Rochester was on the phone to Chuck Morris explaining the recent events with Walter Smith, when he had finished Chuck Morris said, “good job Wayne as soon as this is all cleared up I will personally give you a full debrief and a meal out with Tracy and me. However one thing disturbs me and that is the casing Walter picked up, you say it was a 9x19mm Parabellum and was obviously not connected to the Russian weapons?”
“That’s correct Chuck apparently the Russian weapons were chambered for the 9x39mm SP-6 and my men are issued with the Smith and Wesson S&W Model 64 .38 calibre 4-inch barrel stainless steel revolver and the Remington Model 870 pump-action shotgun.”
“And you say your Sergeant gave him some possible weapons that this round would be fired from?”
“That’s correct Chuck, anything from a Glock or Colt pistol to a HK MP-5 submachine gun.”
“Okay, Wayne you have done your bit, leave it with me for now.”
Chuck Morris hung the phone up and sat at his desk contemplating the information he had just heard.
He looked at his watch, four fifty-six PM time to go pick up Sergeant Cray from the warehouse and return to the safe house, and speak with Max.
