The Legend of the Lingam

The Hindu god Shiva is represented by the lingam, the subtle phallus symbol that (as previously noted) looks more like a pillar candle than a cock.

The lingam has its roots in a formless concept of god, before Shiva and the other gods and goddesses were created from the vortex. Once he was given a form, Shiva declared that he was one with his phallus. The Hindus drew a central belief from that: The phallus is the foundation of life. Shiva, they say, ordered veneration of the lingam.

Some of the megalithic monuments to Shiva still standing in modern India are thousands of years old. They remind us that the lingam (together with the yoni) create life—but it is interesting to note that Shiva and his consorts Shakti, Parvati, and Sati did not procreate. Their expanded definition of the life force should appeal to citizens of the twenty-first century who rarely procreate but often mate.

“The phallus is the source of pleasure,” Shiva also said. “Every orgasm is a divine experience.”
