A Pussy Altar

Worship of female genitalia goes back thousands of years. Goddess and earth-based religions venerated the vulva. The Divine Woman even appeared in cave paintings, her legs open, exposing her vulva for all to adore.

In modern times, the yoni (vulva) is still worshipped in the Hindu faith. But in the West, self-proclaimed “goddesses” tend to be a narrower group: older white women into Tantra or some other form of Eastern sexual mysticism. That’s too bad. Let’s expand pussy worship to make it more attractive to all of us. Power to the pussy! Where would the world be without it?

Some suggestions for your pussy altar:

• Orchids!—yes, the flower that inspired Georgia O’Keefe—either sprays in water or plants

• Paintings, drawings, or sketches of the vulva

• Vulva sculptures

• Candles, flowers, incense

• For a more subtle altar, display a yoni, which is round with a flat base and an indentation in the center—much like a candleholder created for the lingam. You can buy them in Indian shops.
