Image DAY 272: SEX ED SATURDAY
The Art of Sex

Artists have depicted sexuality since the first caveman or woman drew stick figures on the walls. Sadly, if you are an American citizen, you will be able to find very little erotic art in museums. But, you can find beautifully erotic art books filled with photos of paintings, drawings, and sculptures that will touch your soul and stir your mind, as well as your genitals.

In The Art of Arousal, a collection of erotic counters by famous artists, Dr. Ruth Westheimer celebrates a range of pieces, including Titian’s dreamy romantic reclining nudes, Paul Cezanne’s Afternoon in Naples, Aubrey Beardsley’s witty erotic drawings, George Grosz’s pigs dressed as men cavorting with naked women, Toulouse-Lautrec’s French whores, Shunga art, and so much more.

Dr. Ruth writes, “Sex has been one of the principal concerns of art in all cultures, and the finest artists of all times have made the human body the instrument of beauty and feeling.”

Look at erotic art today. What does it say to you? How does it inspire you? Share your opinions about the art you see, and maybe learn something new about each other.
