562. Thomas Gainsborough (1727-1788), English,

Mr. and Mrs. Andrews, c. 1750. Oil on canvas,

70 x 119.4 cm. The National Gallery, London.

This portrait is the masterpiece of Gainsborough’s early years. The landscape, the gun and the dog evoke Robert Andrews’ estate and suggest the idea of an important landlord. His wife sits on an elaborate wooden bench; the painting of her lap is actually unfinished. The outdoor scene and informal postures of the couple follow the fashionable convention of the conversation piece.
