667. Théodore Géricault (1791-1824), French,

The Madwoman (Manomania of Envy),

1819-1820. Oil on canvas, 72 x 58 cm.

Musée des Beaux-Arts, Lyon. Romanticism.

This work is part of a set of five paintings ordered by Esquiro, a reformer of an asylum, who pleaded in favour of the recognition of monomaniacs as normal people. Géricault reaches the psychological depth of his sitter that he dresses conventionally in order to claim her social recognition.
