862. Chaim Soutine (1893-1943), French,

Maxim’s Groom, 1925. Oil on canvas,

81.9 x 74.9 cm. Private collection. Expressionism.

Soutine is mostly influenced by Modigliani in his portraits. But he remained unsuccessful until he was discovered by the great American collector, Dr. Albert C. Barnes, in 1923. He then painted a series of portraits, distinctive through the use of colours: white for the bakers, white and red for the hunters (the attributed title to this work is The Hunter).
