Jeff Koons (1955 York –)
Jeff Koons is an American artist known for his giant reproductions of banal objects. He trained at the Maryland Institute College of Art and worked on Wall Street as a commodities broker before pursuing his career as an artist. Following inspirations from the Pop movement in the 1960s, he uses his work to reflect the commercial systems of the modern world. His art also refers back to the Dada movement and Marcel Duchamp’s appropriation of art through objects. Koons is perhaps one of the most controversial artists of his generation who has provoked a wide array of critical responses that oscillate between those who see him as a standard reproduction Dada or Pop artist and those who view his art as shameless and kitsch. |
