Chapter 18

AMY ROOM

The Amy room also overlooks the front lawn and the cemetery across the street. When I purchased the home, this room had no means of heat. It also had only one light socket. I was told by the real estate agent that the owners didn’t want any heat in their room, but that didn’t quite explain why the room felt so abandoned. (It is possible that someone may have died in that room.) It does have a chimney running through its walls, so the lack of heating was intentional.

As I recounted earlier, in the early 1900s two sisters inherited the home. One was going to be married and the other slept with her sister’s intended husband. They became famous in town for their hatred of each other. They both continued to live in the house but attempted to cut it in half. They cut a channel through the building and took out all of the original fireplaces and put in two heating systems. One of the furnaces installed in 1916 was still there at the time of my purchase. This particular room, Amy, seems to have been neglected during that time period. Perhaps the hatred of the sisters kept the spirits away. It is now a bright and sunny room, complete with a gas fireplace. It is a welcoming room but is the least active of all the rooms in terms of spirits.

The first diary entry is dated March 14, 2009. The first reported haunting by a guest was on November 6, 2010.

Dear Ted and Carol,

We returned @ 11:00 P.M. Everyone seemed to be retired for the night. Watched a little T.V. then went to sleep … Around 1:00 pm I heard footsteps above me. (I had heard someone earlier in their room) so these steps were definitely over my head) I tapped my husband so he could hear. I counted 5 steps … That was it. Quiet for remainder of the night. We will be back.

Beautiful and relaxing as ever. Had a 2nd encounter in the Adelaide room. Someone threw a bar of soap at me & it struck my ankle with such force, I was rattled. The first encounter was a woman staring out of the window & she turned to look at me with a smile on her face.

—Repeat guests

(Carol: Even though this entry is written in the Amy diary, it appears that the guest had also explored the Adelaide room. Also, if you note the dates between this encounter and the next one, you will see how seldom experiences occur in this room.)

We loved our stay here. From the breakfast to the spirit Mercy freaking out my wife because she has a crush on my beard, this whole experience has been great.

(Carol: I did a ghost communication lesson in the dining room that morning and contacted Mercy. When I asked her if she liked anyone in particular, she chose this guest. It was because of his beard. It reminded her of Captain Grant. The guest also drew a picture of Captain Grant, which ended up looking like the Gorton’s Fisherman.)

On our final night had a 1 am visit in the attic above for almost 5 minutes of non-stop movement. When told we were tired and wanted to sleep, said hello to the “spirit” and it stopped. Thanked the “spirit” and went back to sleep. AWESOME!!!

We played pool and card games before we started talking to some of the spirits that are still in house. It was really neat to talk to some of them. Great photos of the head stones help us find out who to ask for. We are hoping to meet with Carol to see if we can meet someone new. This was one of the reasons for this stay. Will be sad if we can’t talk with Carol. My wife had her pendulum with her and she had a great talk with one of the little black slave girls. She was very excited to speak to her.

—Ghost seekers from the Northeast

(Carol: We do have one young girl whose mother was a slave. The girl is around nine or ten years old and has long, straight black hair. Both she and her mother are buried in the old cemetery behind our property.)

The ghost communication lesson was fun, although we were glad to learn the “Amy” is the least haunted room in the house. I don’t know which was creepier, the wind rattling the windows and door on night one or the footsteps in the attic last night.

—Not ghost hunters, just a nice young couple

12/26/13

We had a great time. Last night my husband placed one of the pillows on the bench in front of the bed. When we woke-up the pillow was back on the bed! Creepy!

Had a wonderful night and photographed several orbs and even caught moving orbs on film! No fully formed ghosties or voices to report. It was a unique experience.

Me and my wife came in at 3 AM and as we were opening the door to our room, we suddenly heard footsteps by the stairs on the second floor. We got surprised and scared and could not believe we heard footsteps and nobody was there. Until this we didn’t believe in ghosts. The Holy Spirit or something of the like.

—Guests not really looking for a spirit event

9/1/14

Yesterday when we arrived my husband unlocked both doors to the car. When we tried opening the doors to grab our luggage his door was relocked and mine was unlocked. Then when we were watching TV we could hear footsteps above us. The next day my husband could not find a matching sock and before we went to eat he left them at his bedside. We ended up finding the sock on the other side of the room. We definitely were greeted by a few spirits!

All I can say is in one word “spooktacula.” We will return.

What a beautiful home. We stayed over nite & conducted an investigation. We are from N.Y. & I am part of a paranormal investigation team. This place is warm & inviting. I had an experience, or perhaps it was a dream, I’m not sure but it felt real. While sleeping in bed, I was turned away from my husband & facing the window. I felt someone lay down next to me. The presence was that of a woman. Her head was cradled beneath my chin & she layed beside my chest. I wanted to turn & tell my husband, but I knew if I did she would leave. She was very comforting to me & I fell back asleep. I am looking forward to coming back.

This was the last entry of an experience in the Amy room as of June 2016.
