Chapter 23

THOUGHTS ABOUT SPIRITS
AND COMMUNICATION
METHODS

Spirits are the souls of the dead who once lived on this Earth. I have concluded that they are pure energy. If they manifest (i.e., appear as a human shape), they need to obtain more energy. They can get this energy through the electricity in a building or through a living thing, whether it be human or animal. They can also get energy through the atmosphere if there is energy present, such as during a lightning storm.

One Halloween night I was leading our guests into the cemetery across the street from my home. We all had flashlights. (I found out the year before that candles always blow out.) That afternoon my husband decided to buy all new flashlights and batteries for the night’s festivities. I had the only old flashlight, but it was large and powerful.

That evening my guests and I crossed Route 2A in front of our home and entered the new Poquetanuck Cemetery. We walked about fifty feet and came to a sign designating the cemetery property. We crossed that point and every flashlight went out at the exact same time. All but mine, the only one with old batteries. For the next hour my guests walked through the cemetery in the dark unless they were near me. They even entered the underground crypt, covered with vines, without the aid of a light. When we got back to the inn, the batteries were examined and they were all dead. My husband’s comment was that maybe he had bought bad batteries. That was always a possibility. But it made me wonder who had been in charge of that nighttime walk.

One time we had a ghost hunter enter the cemetery, cross the sign, take a picture, and get a tornado or vortex on her camera. It was a black funnel of air that was about five feet across on the top and narrowed to a point at the bottom. It was about six feet high. The woman stated that a vortex is where our three-dimensional world can reach the afterlife. Whether this is true or not I don’t know. What I do know is that the picture was quite startling. No one caught the image with the naked eye.

We have had guests whose computer batteries have gone dead. One guest had a dead battery in his PC, but when he got home his computer worked fine and the battery was okay.

We have had many instances of the chandeliers dimming at the breakfast table, but one morning we had something quite unusual happen. We were talking about the spirits when one of the lights in one of the chandeliers became very bright and shot a beacon of light across the room. It was quite impressive and caused a flurry of conversation: “Did you see that? And did you see that?” “What was that?” “Wow.” “I’ve never seen anything like that. Has anyone else?” And on and on for about five minutes.

Talking to the spirits can be very tiring. They take your energy in order to communicate with you. I use L-rods to communicate with the spirits. When I use the rods, the spirits are using whatever energy I am putting out there. I have seen others who can communicate with spirits and get very exhausted after they are done. This also makes me wonder what the cost is to myself to communicate with spirits. Do I really want to do this? Some call it a gift. Others call it a curse. I don’t know what to call it.

Not everyone can use the rods. I have found that only a very few individuals, maybe one in fifty, can contact spirits. If you don’t give off your energy for the spirits to use, they cannot communicate back to you. You may be wondering how you can learn to give off the energy. I don’t think that you can learn how. You either have the ability or you don’t. I can also use crystals with the same results.

One young man who stayed with us had purchased a crystal in a nearby store and was told an unlikely story. The store owner told him that the crystal would work only after he did a ritual to bring it to life. I was standing there listening to the young man and doing a slow burn. He had been duped. The crystal did not work at all for him. I asked him if he would let me hold the string that was attached to the crystal. It did what I asked. He was upset with me, thinking that I might have ruined the crystal for him. That was not the case. He simply did not have the gift. He had been ripped off.

This is what he said the store owner told him. The young man was to hold the crystal in his hands so that the crystal could get to know him. Then he was to leave the crystal in the sun for a day. He was given something to say over the crystal and then it would work. If not, try, try again.

I have also found that individuals who have had other lives are more prone to be able to use the rods. Very seldom, if ever, are new souls able to contact spirits. Now, it is not a certainty that old souls will be able to make contact either. They are just more prone to be able to do so. Only on rare occasions has a new soul, in my presence, been able to reach the spirits.

When a person uses the rods, they must be able to remain very, very still. Any activity can make the rods move. What this means is that if you want a certain outcome, you can inadvertently manipulate the rods. By doing this, you do not get accurate information. I call it a nothing session, with results caused by the person and not the spirits.

This is what I do. I sit very still, with my elbows planted on a firm surface such as a dining room table. I hold the sleeves of the rods and anchor my hands together by having my knuckles from one hand touch the knuckles of the other hand. I actually push them together. The sleeves of the rods must be free to turn at both the top and the bottom of the sleeve. Then I say a prayer.

Remember that the spirits were live people once. Treat them with respect. Tell them who you are and ask if they will talk to you. Also, instruct them on what you want the rods to do. Should they open for a yes response or close for a yes? The rods that I use are part copper and part brass. The rods that I have sold to guests are copper-clad steel. I had a guest bring rods made of metal, with the sleeves being plastic buttons. I also had a guest stay with us who had made his own rods out of clothes hangers, with a sleeve found at a plumbing store. They all worked. In ancient times willow branches were used to detect water. They were called witching rods. A willow branch with a Y at the end was used. The user would hold one part of the Y in each hand and look for water, or maybe oil if it was in the late nineteenth century. When they found the water supply, the rod would dip. If the person was using two rods, they would cross.

I had one couple stay with us who would not even consider the use of rods. They said it was not scientific. They refused to even watch a session. I say that if you are a true scientist, you will consider everything. Then you aim to disprove it. That is true science. I still wonder if there is that certain someone out there who could prove that I am motionless when using the rods. If not, then I am unknowingly manipulating them. I talked with my husband about getting a device that holds my hands still. I have yet to find someone to test me.

Besides the rods, there is quite a bit of paraphernalia out there that can be used to detect spirits. The most common instrument that I have seen at Captain Grant’s is the EVP monitor. These tiny machines record the faintest of sounds. Many voices have been captured. The first one I heard was in the upstairs hallway. A women clearly said, “Help me! Help me, please!” The little girl in the hallway who giggles, Deborah Adams, is the most often heard voice. She died at five years of age. Then of course there are the two voices that warned us of Pete.

The most frustrating occurrences for me are when I hear people talking. Once I was in one of the keeping rooms when I heard a man and woman speaking. My thought was that one of the maids had left a television on in one of the bedrooms. As I climbed the grand staircase, I could hear them but not any better than I had on the first floor. I decided the sound was coming from the Elizabeth room. I turned left and walked toward the room. When I reached the door the voices stopped. I went into the room and no one was there and the television was off. I checked each room and went back down the stairs. The voices started again. I thought that if they weren’t upstairs then maybe they were in the basement. I went downstairs and talked to my sister, who was folding towels.

“Do you have a television on?” I asked her.

“No, I don’t know how to turn it on,” she said. My husband had jerry-rigged the television so that it was almost impossible to turn it on.

“Okay,” I said. “Roberta, are you talking to yourself?” She gave me this “are you crazy?” look and I went back upstairs. After about twenty minutes the voices stopped.

Every so often I will hear my name called out, maybe about once every six months. It is usually quite loud. I call out and there is no answer, just silence. It is always when I am alone in the home. Guests have told me that they have experienced the same phenomenon. We have talked about whether this really happened or are we just a little crazy or what?

Then there are the spirits that move around when I’m preoccupied, such as when I’m in the staff bath. This week I was in the bath and heard someone walking around the house. It was quite loud. Doors opened, cabinets shut, and people walked from one end of the house to the other. “Why are the staff here?” I said to myself. “They were to be at the Avery house.” Guests were to arrive there very shortly. I was irritated. I quickly left the bathroom and discovered that I was alone in the house. I called for the staff but no one answered. They were all at the Avery house. I just stood there, puzzled. “What was that? What just happened?” I called my husband and asked him if he had been in the house.

He said, “No, I’m in the workshop.”

I stood there saying to myself, “Someone was here. I know they were. I know they were.”
