I pushed the garage door opener when I heard the first police car pull up. Almost instantly, the officer was out of his car, and hiding behind the protection of the open door. “Drop the guns and get down, now!” he yelled.
Luckily, Sergeant Hopkins was only seconds behind the first officer on the scene. He flashed a badge at the cop and took over. Cruz was right behind him. In less than twenty minutes they had Mary, Ryan, and Brendon in cuffs and on their way to jail.
Cruz came over to Bonnie, Fred, and me. We had been made to wait outside in the alley. “I don’t know whether to shake your hand or cuff you, Jake. What were you thinking?”
“I don’t know, Sarge. I was so mad at Brendon for kidnapping Fred. I guess I wasn’t thinking straight. I didn’t think Ryan and Mary would show up, too.”
“It’s Sergeant, Jake. I told you before, I’m not a drill instructor.”
“He saved your butt, and that’s all you can say to him? You should be giving him a medal.” Bonnie evidently couldn’t hold her tongue any longer.
Cruz smiled at Bonnie, and then knelt down to pet Fred. “The way I see it, big boy, if anyone gets a medal it should be you.”
