The Guided Multiple Launch Rocket System (GMLRS) is an upgrade to the M26 rocket, producing precise destructive and shaping fires against a variety of target sets. GMLRS is employed with the M270A1 upgraded Multiple Launch Rocket System (MLRS) tracked launcher and the M142 High Mobility Artillery Rocket System (HIMARS) wheeled launchers. GMLRS munitions have greater accuracy with a resulting higher probability of kill and smaller logistics footprint.
There are two fielded variants of the GMLRS: the previously produced GMLRS dual-purpose improved conventional munitions (DPICM) variant designed to service area targets; and the GMLRS Unitary variant with a single 200-pound class high-explosive charge to service point targets with low collateral damage. The development of a third variant incorporating an alternative warhead (AW) is ongoing. The GMLRS AW will replace the DPICM increment in compliance with the 2008 DoD Policy on Cluster Munitions & Unintended Harm to Civilians. The GMLRS AW rocket will service area targets without producing unexploded ordnance. It is scheduled to begin fielding in FY15.
The original GMLRS development was an international cooperative program with the United Kingdom, Germany, France, and Italy. Over 2,200 rockets were used in overseas contingency operations through June 2012.
