Who Was Who

Designations such as ‘0.113’ were code-names used by the British Special Operations Executive during the war. Other aliases given here were nicknames applied by friends or enemies, cover-names deployed by intelligence agents or pseudonyms adopted by criminals. Chinese names in this book are generally rendered according to the Wade-Giles system commonly used in the period.

BERRIER, ‘Count’ HILAIRE du (American): Adventurer, aviator, journalist; Japanese agent in Shanghai.

EISENTRAEGER, Colonel LOTHAR (German): Abwehr officer; a.k.a. ‘Ludwig Ehrhardt’; head of Abwehr station in Shanghai, 1942–45.

ERBEN, ‘Dr’ HERMANN (Austrian-American): Adventurer and ship’s doctor (unqualified); monkey expert; friend of Errol Flynn as well as of Dr Albert von Miorini (q.v.); low-grade German agent in Shanghai during the war.

GANDE, W.J. (British): Wholesale liquor merchant; head of Shanghai section of Oriental Mission, Special Operations Executive, 1941.

KAHNER, Major GERHARD (German): Policeman; head of Shanghai Gestapo, 1940–43.

KENTWELL, LAWRENCE KLINDT (British-Chinese): Disbarred lawyer and journalist; a.k.a. ‘Kan Teh-yun’, ‘Kum Tuck-yen’, and ‘Ken Wen-loo’; during the Pacific War member of Legislative Yuan (parliament) of pro-Japanese puppet régime.

KESWICK, JOHN H. (British): a.k.a. ‘0.113’ and ‘AD/O’; Taipan of Jardine, Matheson trading company in Shanghai; senior official of Special Operations Executive, 1942–45.

KESWICK, W. J. (British): a.k.a. ‘Tony’ and ‘AD/U’; brother of the above; Jardine, Matheson taipan; Chairman of Shanghai Municipal Council, 1940–41; during the war served as Director (in London) of Far East section of the Special Operations Executive.

KILLERY, VALENTINE ST JOHN (British): Businessman; a.k.a. ‘O.100’; on eve of war chief representative of ICI in Far East; head of Oriental Mission of Special Operations Executive, May 1941 to June 1942.

MEISINGER, Colonel JOSEF (German): War criminal; head of SS in Far East, 1941–45.

MILES, Lieutenant-Commander (later Admiral) MILTON (American): Naval officer; a.k.a. ‘Mary’, ‘Trout’ and ‘O.610’; Director of Operations of Office of Strategic Services in China, 1942–43; Deputy Commander, Sino-American Cooperative Organization, 1943–45.

MIORINI, Dr ALBERT von (Austrian): Doctor and extortionist; shady operator in Shanghai before and during the war.

MOY, HERBERT ERASMUS (Chinese-American): Broadcaster; worked for German and later for Japanese radio stations in Shanghai during the war.

NATHAN, EDWARD JONAH (British): Businessman; chief manager of the Kailan Mining Administration to February 1943.

OTANI, INAHO (Japanese): Assistant naval attaché and head of the Foreign Affairs section of the Japanese Naval Intelligence Bureau in Shanghai from August 1941.

PICK, ‘Captain’ EUGENE (White Russian): Actor, gangster and political adventurer; born Evgeny Mihailovich Kojevnikoff, a.k.a ‘Hovans’, ‘Doctor Clige’, and many other aliases; employed during the war by Foreign Affairs section of Japanese Naval Intelligence Bureau in Shanghai.

RAYMOND, ALAN (Australian): Horse-racing enthusiast; headed collaborationist ‘Independent Australia League’ in Shanghai during the war.

RUFFE, Baron, R. AUXION de (French): Advocate and author in Shanghai.

SIEFKEN, Captain LOUIS THEODOR (German): Naval officer; a.k.a. ‘Smith’; head of Abwehr station in Shanghai, 1940–42.

SUMAIRE (RAJKUMARI SUMAIR APJIT SINGH) ‘Princess’ (Indian): Fashion model and adventuress; perhaps niece of Maharajah of Patiala.

TAI LI (Chinese): Head of the Military Bureau of Investigation of Statistics; a.k.a. ‘the Himmler of China’ and ‘O.601’.

TU YUEH-SHENG (Chinese): Gangster, politician and philanthropist; head of the ‘Green Gang’ in Shanghai to 1937; during the war moved to Chungking.
