COFFEE WITH MILK AND LEGS

If our minds weren’t on armadillos, one of us would have noticed that Nana was drinking coffee from the bug villa. If I had, I would have stopped her from swallowing the spider legs. When I did notice, it was too late.

“Your Red Cross clothes make you look official,” Sam told Nana and Jeep.

Nana smiled. “We are official.”

“Want to come to work with us?” Jeep asked. “We’ll be up the street at the Janet Reno Exercise Center.”

“We’re trying to get our neighbors to give up some blood,” Nana said.

“That could be why you are having a friends shortage,” I said. “No offense.”

“Can we watch blood spurt out of customers?” Sam asked.

“No,” Jeep said.

“Then no thanks,” I said. “We’re going bug hunting at the grove.”

“Call when you get there,” Nana said.

“If you get home first, the key’s under the fish mat,” Jeep said. “Emergency phone numbers are on the fridge.”

Nana put Mrs. Mackey’s number in Jeep’s phone and gave it back to me. “Call me when you get where you’re going and Maeve if you need anything.”

“The boys have common sense,” Jeep said. “They’ll be fine.”
