APPENDIX III
A Directory of DOC(G) and IGT Zones

As described in “La Légge,” Italy’s wines are classified in a number of ways. A Denominazione di Origine Controllata, or DOC, denotes a wine made within an officially delimited geographic zone, from an officially prescribed grape or blend of grapes. Even more rigidly controlled are those wines labeled with a Denominazione di Origine Controllata e Garantita, or DOCG. Wines labeled with an Indicazione Geografica Tipica, or IGT, are subject to fewer controls over their grape blends and production methods, but nevertheless must come from a specific geographic area.

Below is a list of the DOCG, DOC, and IGT designations as of 2004. Because these designations are constantly being revised, and because new designations are constantly being created, this list may not include every single denomination currently on the books in Italy. The following list is a quick reference to wines that in many cases carry only their DOC (or DOCG) name—a place name more often than not—and nothing else to identify them. Provided below are the prescribed grape blend(s) for each DOC(G), along with information about the production zone and any mandated aging requirements. Many DOC designations—Friuli’s Collio, for example—include prescriptions for a wide variety of wine types. So in addition to the grapes used in the various DOC wines (note: grape names are capitalized here), the various styles are documented in the key below. The listings for each region are alphabetical, although it should be noted that any DOCGs in a region are listed first. The year each DOC(G) was created is in parentheses.

Since IGT wines are most often varietals with no aging requirements, we simply list the IGT zones with brief descriptions of where they’re located and the styles of wines permitted.
