My own personal goal is to read two books a month as well as read something printed (i.e., not on a screen) for at least fifteen minutes a day, three days a week. Do I reach that goal every month? Nooooo. But without it I end up reading exactly zero books and spend too much time snuggled up with my laptop, so that’s why I keep a target in mind. Yours doesn’t have to be that specific, either—you can focus more on the amount of time and frequency (like a half hour every week at the minimum) or a certain style (at least one nonfiction book per month), or you can aim toward quantity (one book in general, no matter the topic). This will help you stay accountable and actually follow through.
And be realistic. You’re not on vacation swaying in a hammock with a drink in hand (although that is a very lovely way to read!)—you’re living your real life, which is likely full of people, things, work, and events. Don’t come down hard on yourself for missing a couple of months in a row, and if you feel like overachieving, that’s great. My best advice is to take what seems realistic and push a little bit further. If you were able to find ten minutes in the easy challenge to read, see if you can do that a few times a week for an entire month or every day for a month, or even extend that time to twenty minutes. If you enjoyed carving out a certain amount of time per week to read rather than a different activity you normally do, then strive for that every week for a month. Or make your goal about the reading material itself: “I will read a section of the paper every morning.”
